Linux on the iPhone: Android running on iPhone!

Planetbeing has announced that he has got Android running on the iPhone.

"Finally breaking radio silence to bring you Android on the iPhone. :)"

I've been working on this quietly in the background. Sorry about the initial video quality, but YouTube promises that the quality will get better as the video gets processed more. The back part of the version I uploaded to Vimeo was cut off.

In the video below Android is demonstrated on an iPhone 2G; however, it should be pretty simple to port forward to the iPhone 3G. The 3GS will take more work.

Long awaited Cydget Element finally here!

The long awaited Cydget element that important information such as your e-mail, text messages, missed calls, weather and calendar on the lock screen displays your iPhone is finally here.
Iphone-lock-screen
The functionality of the Element was outlined in September 2009 by the design firm Teehan + lax, but the busy schedule of Saurik (the creator of Cydia) was the major project delays. The further implementation of Element is taken over by Elias Limneos we know from SBRotator. At first it seemed to have a late April 1st joke, but the big moment has now come really anyway.

Here are the widgets available:

Weather: The weather of one or more cities. A tab also allows you to adjust the range (or the number of seconds) of rotation.
Missed calls: This section can be enabled or disabled. You can decide to call a contact directly by clicking on its name (we recommend disabling this feature to prevent calls). You can also choose the number of missed calls to view.
Calendar: events for your calendar
Email: Watch the latest e-mails received. You can choose to display the number
SMS: Allows you to decide if you want to display messages as they arrived and how many to display.
Facebook: Show all notification of your account
Stock: Display titles in the native application
The modification of options is in Settings> Element.

Cydget Element is available for free on Cydia, and activated in the options Cydget.

iPhone Tips for a better battery life

Paying attention to just a few commonsense pointers will pay off with a longer battery lifespan and battery life for your iPhone. The most important thing is to keep your iPhone out of the sun or a hot car (including the glove box). Heat will degrade your battery’s performance the most.
Your iPhone works best from 32° to 95°F
iPhone Temperate Zone.Your iPhone works best from 32° to 95° F. You should store it in environments of -4° to 113° F. That’s 0° to 35° C and -20° to 45° C for the metrically inclined. Keeping your iPhone as near room temperature as possible (72° F or 22° C) is ideal.

Lock Calendar Update – Display Calendar Events on Lock Screen

From the very first day, I have been using this and every time I update the OS, I forget its name. Here I am adding this for future info.

Available In: Cydia       Price: Free
Lock Calendar It looks like Lock Calendarversion 1.0 has been released. I’m not sure if it has been a while since I have done a review of Lock Calendar or just a while since they have updated it! Either way…there are some new features in the app. In the settings for Lock Calendar (which is location in your stock Settings applicaiton) you now have the ability to choose a specific calendar to display on your lock screen (which is a great faeture) and the ability to do a lot more customizing of the app. You are able to select the seperator color, the background color and transpaency and the text color, current color, font type and font size for the Date Bar, Title, Location and Time. You can pretty much customize the app to look however you want now! I will say that it is not the most user friendly interface but, after a little time…you will get the hang of it.

The T-Grid: iPhone vs. iPad vs. MacBook

At Wednesday’s iPad launch, Steve Jobs began his introduction of the new gizmo by noting that most of us carry a laptop and/or smartphone, and asking whether there’s room for a new kind of device in the middle. His answer, of course, is that there is–and that iPad is that product. That makes iPad the third distinct class of computing device that the company offers–assuming you don’t consider iPods to be computing devices.
Here is a grid that contrasts the iPhone 3GS, the iPad, and the cheapest version of Apple’s flagship MacBook Pro computer. Check it out for a quick summary of what Apple thinks is important to include in each category of device. The MacBook Pro may be the most expensive and capable of the three, but there are certain ways in which it’s beginning to feel like old technology, such as its lack of built-in 3G and GPS. And I’m starting to wonder how long it’ll be until Jobs decides it’s time to build a touchscreen Mac

Speed Test Puts iPhone Right Behind Full Size Keyboard

Phil Gyford has tested the speed of six different input devices and found the iPhone beats everything but a full size QWERTY keyboard.

The six input devices used were:
- The Apple Newton
- The Palm Vx’s Graffiti
- The Palm Treo 650’s hardware QWERTY keyboard
- The Apple iPhone 3G’s software QWERTY keyboard
- Pen and paper
- A full-size QWERTY keyboard

The test was performed with a memorized 221 word text selection from the speech given by Aneurin Bevan to the British Labour Party in 1959 following their general election defeat.

While not exactly scientific, you can take a look at Gyford's results below. Interestingly, the iPhone was even able to beat a pen and paper which might surprise some people.

Dear Apple: What we want to see for iPhone 4.0

This is the first of a series of letters to Apple on your behalf, telling the gang in Cupertino what would make their wonder-phone even more wondrous. This letter strictly focuses on the iPhone OS in general – the home screen, navigation, and settings. Future letters will deal with hardware and applications.

The next letter will be published one week from today on Sunday 1/17. We'll be telling Apple what we want from the next iPhone's hardware. Want a different enclosure? Camera flash? RFID? OLED? Email them at tuawiphone [at] me dot com (by mid-day, Friday, January 15th at the latest)!

iPhone Touchscreen Performs More Accurately Than Droid, Nexus One

MOTO Development has posted results of a DIY touchscreen analysis for the iPhone, Droid, Droid Eris, and Nexus One.
Using a simple technique that anyone can perform at home, MOTO evaluated the resolution and accuracy of each touchscreen device. All they used was a basic drawing program, a steady hand, and a few straight lines drawn very slowly on the screen.
"The iPhone’s touch sensor showed the most linear tracking with the least amount of stair-stepping. The Droid Eris and Nexus One tied for second with only faint wiggling – but actually performed best at the edge of the screen. Last in the line-up was the Motorola Droid, which demonstrated significant wavy artifacts or “stair-stepping.”
You can take a look at how the tests were performed in the video below. A chart of the results can also be found below.

How to Update Your 2G iPhone to 3.0 Without Losing Activation, Unlock

How to Update Your 2G iPhone to 3.0 Without Losing Activation, Unlock!!!
This is an important note for those looking to update their 2G iPhone to the 3.0 firmware without losing their activation and unlock. If you click the Update button in iTunes to install the 3.0 firmware you will not loose your unlock. (2G iPhones ONLY).
HOWEVER, if you are using the 2G iPhone on an unofficial carrier you may loose your activation. This means that will your network will be detected but you will not be able to use your iPhone. You will loose your activation if you used QuickPwn to jailbreak your iPhone. If you used PwnageTool you will not. If you are super excited about iPhone 3.0 and wish to update immediately, either make sure you jailbroke with PwnageTool or rejailbreak using PwnageTool and then do the update.

Otherwise wait for a little bit and the iPhone Dev-Team will release new PwnageTool and QuickPwn utilities shortly.
